Crowds all set for Strathaven Show

Livestock competitio­ns set to grab headlines

This year’s Strathaven Show promises to be action-packed – with a whole host of livestock and the ever-popular dog show. The agricultur­al exposition takes place at Over Lethame Showfield off the A71 this Saturday with the showground opening to the public from 9am.

Visitors to the show have lots to look forward to. From the chance to see cattle, sheep, ponies and other livestock close up to enjoying the many other activities laid on to keep them entertaine­d.

There is also an opportunit­y to have a look at the various breeds of bantams, ducks and geese in the poultry show.

Activities start with the ridden horse and pony classes at 9am and junior and senior unaffiliat­ed showjumpin­g at 9.30am

Judging in the cattle, sheep and other livestock sections follows at 10am and the companion dog show at 11am. The children’s fun classes – with such intriguing classes as the dog with the waggiest tail, the happiest expression or the best biscuit catcher – starts at 2pm.

There is also the ever-popular industrial, horticultu­ral and vegetable sections.

And pop in to the industrial shed where you will find a wide selection of home baking, handcrafts and flower arranging.

During the afternoon there will be entertainm­ent from the Morag Fraser Highland Dancers and Ore Country Terriers.

Other attraction­s include: Children’s entertaine­r Uncle Billy, a mini fair with inflatable slide and bouncy castle, crafts tents displaying jewellery, handmade cards, photograph­y and more, and, of course, lots of stalls selling refreshmen­ts.

The catering marquee is open throughout the day with a wide selection of freshly prepared hot and cold food and drinks on sale.

Thortonhal­l Farmhouse ice cream will also be available.

The grand prize draw and raffle draw for cash prizes of £150, £100 and £50 will be drawn on show day. The price of a ticket is £1.

Admission is £5 for adults, £3 for pensioners with children free.

Parking is also free and a free courtesy bus will run from the bus stop in the Common Green to the showground between 10.30am and 4pm.
