Cody back to her best

-

A refreshingly honest portrayal of motherhood is led by a gripping Charlize Theron.

Diablo Cody’s script is her best since Juno and packed with witty, interesting dialogue.

Mackenzie Davis turns heads too with a nanny so seemingly perfect it’s like Mary Poppins has come to vibrant life.

American Horror Story: Cult (18) ●●●●●

The seventh incarnation of the anthology series is a slight improvement on previous entry Roanoke.

The main reason for this is Evan Peters’ charismatic display as cult leader Kai Anderson.

Creepy imagery and the usual gore abounds, along with pot-shots at Donald Trump and callbacks to past seasons.

Ghost Stories (15) ●●●●●

This tribute to the classic British portmanteau horrors began life on the stage.

Its creators, Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, adapt the multi-story tale for the screen, with the latter also starring as sceptic professor Phillip Goodman.

Goodman investigates three inexplicable “hauntings” that serve up tension and dread.

The best is the Paul Whitehouse-led first story, although Alex Lawther and Martin Freeman shine during their segments.

But while it’s never less than creepy, Ghost Stories lacks truly terrifying moments. You’ll struggle to guess where it’s all headed but the ending is a slight letdown that’s been done, and seen, before.
