Time for some common sense in Parliament

- Colin Paterson

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.

MPs return to Parliament this week for an autumn session which looks set to produce fireworks.

The issue of Brexit will lead to drama which in turn will fill plenty of column inches and broadcasters’ air time.

It appears the practical impact of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union is beginning to register with the UK Government currently publishing ‘technical notes’ in the event of a nodeal Brexit.

Simply walking away from the EU with no agreement in place on March 29 will cause chaos, however, it is difficult to say with certainty whether or not tough talk regarding no deal is a negotiating ploy or ministers really do plan on taking Britain over the cliff edge.

Whatever the truth, it is time for some common sense in the House of Commons with MPs needing to realise that there is no majority either in Parliament or across the country for a no-deal Brexit.

From afar, it would seem that many, many people are still blissfully unaware of the potential issues we face if a deal isn’t agreed – lucky them.

But for EU citizens living here, British nationals living in the EU, people in Northern Ireland and businesses, to name but a few, the realities are understood and fears for the future real. In terms of today’s paper, we have our final batch of First Day At School photos on page 21 – thank you to all parents who took part in this feature.

And we can confirm the annual P1 class pictures will be printed from next Wednesday, September 12.

Check out our front page every week to see the schools listed in that particular edition of the paper.
