Are parking permits answer in Hairmyres?
News readers have their say on proposal
South Lanarkshire Council is considering introducing residents’ parking permit zones in streets near Hairmyres train station.
Householders near there – and the adjacent University Hospital Hairmyres – have grown increasingly frustrated over the years as more commuters park in residential areas.
A six-month consultation exercise will now take place so the News asked shoppers in the town centre for their views on permits and their experiences at Hairmyres.
John Aitken from Calderwood said: “It’s harsh for people who need to get the train but it has got so busy now that cars are everywhere and something needs to be done. You’ve also got so many housing estates now that are outwith routes for local buses. The transport system in East Kilbride is appalling.”
Kelvin man Joe Campbell said: “I can understand how permits would help because it must be very frustrating for people living near there. Houses are being built all around the station so where is everyone supposed to go? There’s not a lot people can do.”
Calderwood gran Annie Webster said: “Permits would be fair. You’ve got to drive round a few times to get a space at the hospital and be there 30 minutes before your appointment because people use the car park for the station.”
Paul Lambert from Calderwood added: “More spaces would help but where would they do it? I’ve never had any bother at the Village station because there are permits there.”
