EK thug blasted by cops

Hit and run incident

- Andrea Lambrou

Police have described horror hit and run driver Gerald Gavan as“cowardly” after he admitted trying to kill six children.

At the High Court in Glasgow last week, the 22-year-old East Kilbride thug pled guilty to the attempted murder of the youngsters, and his intended target Billy McGregor, by deliberately driving a car at them.

The carpet salesman from West Mains ploughed into the children, who had innocently been caught up in a bitter family feud, in Glasgow.

Gavan and McGregor have links to opposing sides connected to the murder of Jamie Lee in the area in July 2017.

A 14-year-old girl was seriously injured in the shocking incident after Gavan hit her then reversed over her. She suffered a broken neck and needed lengthy surgery.

Following Gavan’s guilty plea, Detective Inspector Peter Sharp, of Greater Glasgow CID, said: “Gerald Gavan has finally admitted his guilt following a number of months where he tried to evade justice in a cowardly manner.

“This incident which unfolded in the afternoon of Saturday, March 24 in Castlemilk was something which will no doubt stay in the minds of the young victims for a long time.

“The injuries sustained by the 14-year-old girl were so serious that she required immediate surgery. Thankfully she survived, however, the consequences could have been much, much worse.

“For anyone to play out retribution or aggression in a public area using a vehicle as a weapon will simply not be tolerated. For innocent members of the public to be caught up in this horrendous incident is unacceptable.

“I hope that the fact Gavan has pled guilty has spared the victim’s families the torment of a trial.”
