24 SUCCESS Candy cheerleaders pick up top awards
Troop shine at event
A troop of East Kilbride cheerleaders certainly have plenty to shout about.
For the Electric Candy Cheerleaders – based in Kelvin Industrial Estate and established in 1999 – are Scottish, national and European champions.
The Legacy championships were held in Glasgow and Candy were victorious in areas of their dance and cheer programme; excelled in jazz, hip-hop and pom as well as level 1 and 2 cheer.
The group picked up four first places, three second places, three fourth places and a seventh place.
Head coach Nicola Hamilton told the News: “This was a massive success for the team given that the number of entrants from all over Scotland and the standard of each dance school and cheer teams entering.
“To get top three in any of the divisions is a great feat as every school excelled in there performances.”
There was more good news with Nicola given a major role in coaching the level 5 senior all girls Team Scotland squad.
“I am so grateful to be offered this role and I am excited to be given the opportunity to coach athletes from all round Scotland,” she added.
“Scotland has not entered at any event in recent years with level 5 skills so it’s a hard task to take these girls from level 2 and 3 and try get them ready for April to compete in Florida at the ICU championships.”
In the last few months, Sport Cheer Scotland have established themselves as a voice for cheerleading in Scotland.
Nicola is currently the area contact for South Lanarkshire and also carries a seat on the board of directors.
She added: “All in all, the future looks bright for the Candy kids and that of all cheerleading teams in Scotland who have a desire to represent the country in America and around the world.”
