Ban on sky lanterns
A ban on the intentional release of balloons and sky lanterns on council-owned property, land and events licensed by the local authority, has been introduced by councillors amid fears they are dangerous and harmful to the environment. Online News readers gave their views.
Jennifer Ford posted: “Should have been banned way before now.”
Brian Doig said: “It’s not about punishment, it’s about education.
“I was mesmerised by a Chinese lantern display for a dear friend taken far far too early. I loved it. I had no idea of the consequences.
“If a few more people catch on through this publicity then that is good enough for me.”
Lesley Hatrick wrote: “What about putting a stop to fireworks – makes more sense.”
Parking permit plan
South Lanarkshire Council are proposing to introduce residents’ parking permit zones in streets near Hairmyres train station to deal with increased demand.
Elizabeth Kennedy posted: “The issue that needs addressed is the entirely inadequate parking at Hairmyres.”
Samantha Stokes said: “Nobody should be parking in the hospital for the train station. It is beyond selfish.”
Julie Chambers wrote: “This is not the answer. This is just going to force more commuters to park in Hairmyres Hospital – causing more distress to patients.”
