New vote is democracy

-

Dear Editor,

The prospect of a second European Union referendum vote clearly gets some people’s backs up (Upholding democracy, September 19).

John Reilly clearly thinks the Brexit referendum result of June 2016 should stand come what may, with a disregard to people who might have changed their mind on the back of learning more about what was a complex vote.

There is growing demand for a People’s Vote and one should be granted if the worst-case scenario of the United Kingdom leaving the EU without a deal looks like coming to pass.

That is not undemocratic. It is absolutely democratic.

I followed the EU referendum period closely and nowhere do I remember seeing politicians on the Leave side outline some of the problems we have witnessed in the last two years.

If we weren’t being told about £350 million for the NHS, we were being advised that agreeing a deal with the EU would be the easiest in history.

Now it shouldn’t be forgotten that there is still time for a deal to be done and, if such an agreement is reached, we have MPs at Westminster who will scrutinise it. They can vote the way they feel is in the best interests of the country, knowing what the referendum result was.

However, we are a long way from that point and so the option of a People’s Vote should not be cast aside. After all, we would not want to appear undemocratic.
