Should food banks in crisis receive funding?

Readers give their view on food poverty

- Andrea Lambrou

The average person is only three months away from having to use a food bank, organisers of East Kilbride Community Food Bank have claimed.

As reported in the News, the group and the Loaves & Fishes charity are running out of food week to week as they struggle to cope with the increasing demand on their services.

The News asked shoppers in East Kilbride if they thought the government should be doing more to support those who help others.

Alison King, 35, from Lindsayfield said: “I don’t think politicians realise the extent of the problem. Food banks are needed.

“I think people need to be made more aware of where they are and what they need. There should be more food donation stations.”

John Campaigne, 63, from Blantyre said: “There shouldn’t be a requirement for them but in reality they are essential for people in need. It’s sad. The benefits system needs to be re-examined and proper investment is needed.”

Grandson Ryan, 16, agreed and added: “Food banks are a great cause, especially in winter when people are struggling more and the homeless are having a harder time. There should be more funding for these great causes.”

Nik Hil, 30, from Thorntonhall said: “Food banks are really helpful for people who need a little help. I think the government should be doing more with regards to the benefits system so there is no need for food banks at all.”
