‘Red tag’ bins scheme

South Lanarkshire Council is cracking down on items being put in the wrong bins.

A red tag system is now in operation meaning contaminated bins will not be collected with householders told to remove offending items. Online readers had their say on the move...

Lynn Gibson posted: “This is just stupid on the part of South Lanarkshire Council. I live in a block of flats and neighbours put whatever they like in other folks’ bins without even asking.”

Donna McDougall said: “Will just discourage folk from recycling if you ask me. How about cracking down on more pressing issues like anti-social behaviour and benefit fraud? That’ll save the taxpayers some money!”

Amanda Mills wrote: “They don’t empty recycling bins anyway... that’s two pick-ups they have missed for our flats (four weeks) now. I can’t use my bin and house bin is full/overflowing with additional recycling. It’s a complete and utter disgrace.”

Paul Clarke posted: “So you’re telling me binmen are going to have time to sift through the contents of the bin to decide whether it is suitable for them to take and dispose of, when they can’t always make it round on actual recycling day?”

Caroline Creasey said: “You will just end up black bagging everything then so they will take it or taking it to a council dump which will defeat the purpose of recycling.”
