Eateries shutting up shop

Blow for The Hub

East Kilbride News - - POVERTY - Andrea Lambrou

Two restaurants – including a second eaterie in The Hub – have ceased trading in East Kilbride.

Frankie and Benny’s in Lees Burn Court, Nerston and Filling Station in the town centre’s Olympia Mall have pulled down the shutters for the final time.

Owner The Restaurant Group revealed losses across the board in its first half results this year – including a £5.4 million drop in earnings.

A spokesman could not confirm the total number of job losses but told the News: “The casual dining market is facing various headwinds, such as increased property costs, which has impacted certain sites within our Leisure portfolio.

“In light of this backdrop, we have taken the difficult decision to close the Frankie and Benny’s site and the Filling Station. We regret the impact on colleagues and will ensure that they are supported throughout the process, as well as identifying opportunities for those wishing to remain in the business where possible.”

The closure of a second restaurant at The Hub will be a blow to shopping centre bosses following the collapse of The Handmade Burger Co. chain last July. The EK branch shut its doors just nine months after opening as part of the new leisure hub.

An EK, East Kilbride spokesman said: “Unfortunately market conditions across the retail and restaurant industries continue to be extremely challenging and this has resulted in a number of Filling Station outlets across the UK closing their doors. Our principal concern is for the employees and we will be looking to support them.”
