Pupils praised during focus on DFID work
MP in school visit
High school pupils got an insight into the work of the East Kilbridebased Department of International Development (DFID).
East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP Dr Lisa Cameron visited Calderglen High on behalf of the DFID to investigate the school’s sector-leading work in “Connecting Classrooms” with its international partners.
Much of this focused on Calderglen’s continued partnership with Mountview High School, in Cape Town, where students are involved in joint projects, fundraising and visiting every year with as part of the annual Cape Connections team.
Dr Cameron spoke with various members of the team who plan to visit Mountview High in 2019.
Calderglen head teacher Liz White said: “Dr Cameron reflected on her own trips to Nigeria and Uganda which were very insightful.
“Students were encouraged and excited about the experiences that they would encounter on their own visit and the memories and values they would bring home.
“Pupil support manager Moray Meechan went on to discuss Calderglen’s previous work with Nehemiah School in South Sudan, where over £30,000 was raised, helping to build classrooms and enhance pupils learning experiences as well as assisting in the development of valuable community resources.”
Students explained the work which has already been done and talked about future fundraising endeavours.
Mrs White added: “Dr Cameron was very impressed with the work done by Calderglen and its students and offered her continued support in ensuring that Calderglen’s partnership working with international schools, continues to grow from strength to strength.”
