Is council wrong over gravestone notices?
News readers have their say on big issue
South Lanarkshire Council have come under fire for putting safety notices on headstones at Philipshill Cemetery.
Plot owners and relatives of the deceased have spoken of their shock at being confronted with the notices and ‘eyesore’ wooden stakes.
But the local authority has defended its actions, saying they have a duty of care to provide a safe environment in its cemeteries so must advise lair owners of stability issues.
The News asked shoppers in East Kilbride town centre for their thoughts on the council’s handling of the situation.
Roisin Doherty from Westwood said: “Could they not have put signs around the cemetery rather than defacing gravestones? I’d be so angry if I went to pay respect to one of my family members and saw that.”
Douglas Bruce, whose father is buried at Philipshill, said: “I think it’s over the top. It seems like someone on the council wants to be heard and they are making sure they are covering every angle. I think it’s completely ridiculous.”
Stewartfield resident Elizabeth Bruce said: “For signs to be on the headstones, I think it’s unacceptable and the totally wrong way to go about it.”
Georgia Rowlett from Westwood said: “I’d be raging. I’d be knocking that sign down.
“I think it’s very disrespectful. There’s better ways to go about it.”
