Health walkers help to end stigma

- Andrea Lambrou

An East Kilbride charity spread awareness of the health benefits of walking in the great outdoors to mark World Mental Health Day.

East Kilbride Community Trust go on weekly ‘health walks’ through K-woodlands which surround St James Retail Park in Hairmyres.

There they take in the sights and sounds of nature and pause for a freshly brewed cuppa by fire deep within the woods.

The two-hour walks, which take place every Wednesday morning, are an excellent way to boost physical and mental health with exercise and friendly chat in a stunning natural environment.

And on World Mental Health Day last Wednesday the Trust encouraged more locals to put their best feet forward and promote overall positive wellbeing to help reduce the stigma and prevent tragedy.

Community woodland engagement officer Chloe Rossi said: “Mental health is becoming more prominent in the world today.

“In the past people have stigmatised mental health issues, however Mental Health Awareness Week was significant as it highlighted the importance of addressing mental health issues today.

“It highlighted that mental health doesn’t discriminate and affects a lot of people so why shy away? You should not be ashamed to seek help if you are feeling down or anxious and the more people are made aware of this, the more people are able to seek help.

“There are many different ways of dealing with mental health issues today, including enjoying nature and the outdoors. There is growing amounts of research to support that greenspace use helps reduce depression, stress and anxiety.

“Not only does sunlight and taking in fresh air improve your mental wellbeing, but also by taking yourself away from your busy life and enjoying the silence and calmness of the woodlands helps people relax.

“Our Wednesday morning health walk encourages people to take a break from their busy life’s to join us on a nice walk through the K-woodlands, we even stop for a cup of tea and a biscuit during the walk. It’s great for your physical and mental wellbeing and is also a chance to meet new people.

“If you can’t make our Health Walk, not to worry, we are always encouraging people to use the K-Woodlands. Whether it’s for a short walk during your lunch break at work or taking part in one of our regular events, the K-woodlands is open to everyone.

“Your own little zen space in the middle of East Kilbride.”

Walkers leave from St James Avenue on Wednesdays at 10am till12pm. For more information e-mail stephen@ekct.co.uk
