Yamakai Karate squad members have been raking in the medals recently – and the performances of one youngster has earned her a call-up to represent Scotland at the World Championships.

East Mains starlet Amy Luke is heading to Madrid next month after contributing to the club’s impressive tally of 28 medals over the last two months.

She will be joined by club coach Jim Ross, who is part of the national coaching team.

The club have been on the road since August competing in England, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany, as well as contesting two events at home in Scotland.

And during that time Amy and her club-mates have won seven gold medals, eight silver, nine bronze plus four team awards.

First up was the Darlington Open in August where medal winners on the day included silvers for Matthew Miller, Luke Miller and Roxy Gerelyuk.

Kayden Moy claimed bronze with team medals coming in the boys and girls 10-12 years team categories as well as the senior male/female team.

Last month Amy Luke took gold in the under-21 category before securing the silver in the seniors at the Basel Open.

The same weekend squad members were involved in the local Wishaw Grand Prix where they secured gold thanks to Logan Chilton.

Jack Johnstone took silver, as did Luke Miller, with bronze medals going to Gordon Burns, Keri Robertshaw and Abi Roach. Later in the month Yamakai members were in Linlithgow for the Meadowbank Junior Open.

This gave the club the chance to hand some novice competitors vital experience.

Logan Chilton again took gold with Zoe Barbour winning silver. Bronze medals went to Alan Kovalevskij, Ben Young, Isaac Eddleston and Simone Tonnar.

Meanwhile, four members travelled to the Irish International in Dublin where three made their respective finals.

Logan maintained his fine form to claim gold in the Cadet Male under 57 kilos kumite.

Luke Miller won gold in the Junior Male under 68 kilos section, with Keri Robertshaw winning silver in the girls 10 to 12yrs plus 38 kilos kumite.

The same weekend Matthew Miller attended the British International Open in Leicester, winning gold in the under 21 Male kumite under 60 kilos section.

Finally, Amy wrapped up an impressive spell in Germany where she returned from Annual Banzai Cup in Berlin with a bronze in the senior female under 50 kilos kumite and a team gold with a Scotland XI in the senior female team kumite.

If you are interested in joining Yamakai Karate Club, they meet twice weekly in the United Reformed Church Hall in East Mains. They have recently started a class on Thursday evenings for kids aged five to seven, which runs from 6pm until 6.45pm.

The sessions focus on Shotokan Karate and competition sport karate sessions. The first two weeks free of charge.
