Bungling Brexiters are losing the argument

-

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.

It was estimated that around 700,000 took to the streets of London to campaign for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.

In blazing sunshine, the colourful march made its way, determined that their collective voice would be heard as they exercised their democratic right. Will they be successful? That depends on how many choose to support them. The phrase ‘will of the people’ with regards the Brexit Leave vote in June 2016 is often used but if the will of the people now is for a final say on what is (or isn’t) agreed with the European Union then it’s up to politicians to make that happen.

While the number of folk in favour of a People’s Vote is a matter of debate, what isn’t up for discussion is the fact that Brexiters are losing the argument.

Their bombastic tone in the wake of victory now sounds rather hollow, their promises of this, that and the next thing absolutely shredded.

The UK Government’s own analysis shows that we will be worse off after Brexit in every scenario – that message is slowly sinking in but will it be too late to do anything about it?

Time will tell. But should the Brexiters prevail, they will be held to account for what happens next as will all of the politicians, both Remain and Leave, who are in a position to act.

Finally, there was a mistake in last week’s golden wedding anniversaries picture spread so we have decided to run it again over pages 28 and 29.

Our apologies for the error but we’re absolutely sure those loved-up couples will still be together and celebrating 60 years of marriage when the time comes around... Colin Paterson
