Pregnant cats cruelly abandoned at flats

SSPCA rescue pets

- Andrea Lambrou

Four cats – two of which are heavily pregnant – were found cruelly dumped on a doorstep in a block of flats in East Kilbride.

The frightened moggies were rescued from a top floor in Pembroke, Calderwood on Thursday after being discovered by a horrified resident.

Two of the cats – which have been named Fayre and Adelita by Scotland’s animal rescue charity – are pregnant.

Fayre is seven weeks into her pregnancy and Adelita is ready to give birth.

The Scottish SPCA were alerted to the scene after the woman came home to find the four cats abandoned outside her door in two cat carriers.

Peter Fleming, manager of the SSPCA’s rescue and rehoming centre in Lanarkshire, said: “They were left in two cat carriers on the top floor of a block of flats.

“We’re not sure how long they were left in the carriers but they were in good condition when they arrived to us on Friday.

“However, two of the cats, who we’ve named Adelita and Fayre, are pregnant.

“Fayre is about seven weeks along and Adelita could give birth at any time.

“Thankfully, they are now in safe hands and are being cared for by the team at our centre in Lanarkshire.”

Mr Fleming added: “If anyone recognises Adelita, Fayre, Nina and Baby, we’d urge them to contact us as we are keen to identify the person responsible for abandoning them.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

People with information are urged to contact the Scottish SPCA helpline on 03000 999 999.
