Bin tags are a rubbish idea

-

Dear Editor,

I feel I have to highlight a story about our recent bin collection.

Our blue bin (cardboard) was to be emptied on Friday, October 12.

I put the bin out at 6am when I left for work. It was very windy but not raining, the rain started about 6.30am.

My husband happened to look out the window and saw rubbish and cardboard all over the garden and the street, which had blown out from our bin and neighbour’s bins.

He went out in the pouring rain and galeforce wind and picked up ALL the cardboard and rubbish and put it in our bin (trying to be a good neighbour!)

He picked up someone’s egg box and put it at the top of the bin – but then the bin police came along, lifted the bin lid, closed it, stuck a red sticker on it and stuck them on neighbours’ bins as well before driving away. An easy day for them! Now, we cannot be responsible for the weather. Bin lids will blow open in a strong wind, things will blow out said bins when very windy and cardboard will get wet when it is wet and windy!

So what do the super duper council want us to do?

Not go to work on bin day? Let contents of bins blow all over the street?

Who in their infinite wisdom at the council thought that a sticker slapped on a wet bin on a stormy day would stay attached?

We came home at night to red stickers all over the place. The garden, the road, the pavement and one hanging from my neighbour’s car bumper!

How much of our hard-earned council tax money has been wasted on this nonsense? Mrs Baillie, via email
