40 YEARS AGO

The new coronary care unit at Hairmyres Hospital was lying empty – due to a lack of staff.

Eight staff nurses were needed to start the phasing in of the unit but despite extensive advertisin­g, the necessary staff members had not been recruited.

The new unit was designed for specialist post-coronary care.

Meanwhile, angry parents blocked vehicles on Lethame Road in Strathaven as pupils made their way to Kirklandpa­rk Primary which opened its doors for the first time.

‘Pavements not platitudes’was their cry as they protested against the failure of Strathclyd­e Regional Council to provide adequate pavements for youngsters who were going to school.

30 YEARS AGO

What Everyone Wants checked into the former Arnotts store which had lain empty for three months in the town centre.

The outlet was expected to create up to 30 full-time jobs and 30 part-time positions.

Elsewhere, and a schoolgirl from East Kilbride met the education minister Kenneth Baker to give a report on the horrors of life in the Third World. Stephanie Coyne had visited poor regions in Africa.

20 YEARS AGO

Children’s charities could count on staff and customers at the Royal Bank of Scotland branch in East Kilbride.

For £2100 was raised with Kinross Children’s Hospice and the Ronald MacDonald House at Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow to benefit from the cash.

Meanwhile, a woman from West Mains told neighbours they had nothing to fear from foxes rooting about in their gardens.

Residents of Dunbar Hill had voiced concerns but were told not to worry about the foxes’presence.
