Should People’s Vote take place on Brexit?

News readers have their say on big issue

- Paul Thomson

With Brexit negotiations continuing to drag on, the clamour for a People’s Vote on the final deal struck between the UK Government and the European Union has gathered pace.

Around 700,000 people marched on London recently in support of a referendum on the outcome – so the News asked shoppers in East Kilbride if they were for or against a People’s Vote.

Carol Wilson from Westwood is backing it and said: “I think there should be a People’s Vote.

“Prime Minister Theresa May has lost her way a bit and we need a vote to see what people think because a lot has changed since the initial referendum. We need to sort it.”

James McGuigan said: “I’m on the fence a bit because I feel we’ve had the referendum so we should make the best of what we’ve got and get on with it. I don’t think we’ve prepared properly for a no deal and the way it’s looking I don’t think we’ll get a deal. What a mess.”

Stewartfield resident Jacqui Thomson said: “It’s just a complete nightmare. We should be able to vote because that’s what a democracy is all about. I saw everyone down in London and the passion they’ve got speaks volumes for that.

“We’ve voted to leave and it does feel like there’s backtracking going on.”

West Mains man Albert White said: “What do we elect people for? They are the people who should be guiding us.

“I think it should be left to Parliament.”

We should be able to vote because that’s what a democracy is all about... Jacqui Thomson
