Town centre bosses have responded to Loaves & Fishes’ plea for help with a bumper cheque.
EK, East Kilbride management has made a £1000 donation to the crisis-hit food bank from its long-running community fund.
The gesture follows a series of News reports highlighting the plight of the charity which last month ran out of emergency food parcels for the first time in its 26year history.
Chairman Denis Curran MBE looked to the local community for support and the response from the people of East Kilbride was instantaneous.
EK, East Kilbride has joined dozens of generous local folk, schools, community groups and businesses in helping people in need in our town.
Mr Curran said: “The outpouring of support from the East Kilbride community has been incredible and the funding from the shopping centre is a very welcome additional boost to our efforts.
“To the individuals and families that we support it is much more than a simple donation.
“In practical terms the money will allow us to buy more food and toiletries and provide additional meals, but it also gives hope to people who have no hope and love to people who are desperately in need of love.”
Ian McLelland, centre director at EK, East Kilbride, said: “Denis and his team do a remarkable job day in and day out to help those who are most vulnerable in our society, so when we heard the charity was experiencing difficulties we wanted to offer our help.
“The centre’s community fund has supported many good causes over the years and we are pleased that we have been able to provide some support to help the Loaves & Fishes team continue to help those in need in and around the town.
“We fully understand that the charity is still facing many challenges and we will be working with Denis to try and identify other opportunities where we can provide additional help.”
Loaves and Fishes was founded in 1989 and since then the East Kilbridebased charity has provided meals, food parcels and toiletries to thousands of individuals and families in need across Lanarkshire and Glasgow.
The community fund is part of EK, East Kilbride’s Helping Hands programme which aims to support good causes and local initiatives.
A very welcome boost to our efforts...
