Strathaven Park voted Scotland’s No 1

- Shirley Bartynek

A popular Avondale public park has been voted Scotland’s best for the third year in a row.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful confirmed that Strathaven Park has reached the top 10 in a nationwide poll of the UK’s best green spaces.

And it has retained its title as Scotland’s best park for the third year running.

Almost 1900 green spaces from across the UK were competing for a place in the top 10 UK parks, organised by the Green Flag Award scheme and administered in Scotland by Keep Scotland Beautiful.

As the only Scottish park to reach the top 10, Strathaven Park takes home the accolade of Scotland’s top park.

Delighted Tricia Summers, chair of Friends of Strathaven Park, said: “This is great news for Strathaven, where the park is a well-loved amenity for local residents and visitors alike.

“The park is an asset to our town for everyday recreation as well as popular annual events like gala day and the balloon festival. Thanks to the park staff who keep Strathaven Park looking beautiful.”

All Green Flag Awardwinning parks and green spaces are entered into the annual People’s Choice Award vote, which every year sees countrywide mass public involvement in voting for the very best.

In July, expert judges awarded the coveted Green Flag award to 71 parks and open spaces across Scotland.

South Lanarkshire Council’s head of facilities, waste and grounds services Alistair McKinnon said: “I am absolutely delighted that Strathaven Park has not only come out top in Scotland yet again, but has also been rated in the top 10 for the whole of the UK.

“The recognition is testament to all those who work tirelessly to keep the park at the level of quality that we have become accustomed to but which we should never take for granted, and to the many visitors who enjoy its facilities while also taking care of them and appreciating them.”
