One-way victory

Work is completed

- Nicola Findlay

Improvements to a “hazardous” one-way system in East Kilbride have been welcomed by a community watchdog.

East Mains Community Council have long campaigned for improved signage at Maxwell Drive – saying the busy road was an accident waiting to happen.

A CCTV camera was recently deployed to monitor motorists using the one-way at Maxwell Drive at its junction with Stuart Street and 136 drivers were caught blatantly flouting the law.

This led to South Lanarkshire Council promising to install new signage, better lighting of signs and road markings with work now complete.

Community council chair Bill Arthur said: “We are extremely happy at long last after months of discussion with South Lanarkshire Council and the police we are now seeing some sort of improvement to Maxwell Drive.

“We hope that this will help stop the one-way system being so blatantly abused by some drivers and make it safer for everyone.”

East Kilbride Central North Labour councillor Joe Fagan, who has worked with the community council on the issue, said: “After a lot of hard work and persistence from East Mains Community Council and co-operation from council officials, we have finally been able to deliver road safety improvements which I welcome.

“I’m hopeful that it will make a difference but it’s down to drivers’ behaviour. There now really is no excuse to flout the law.”

SLC’s head of roads and transportation Gordon MacKay said: “Following the concerns raised with us earlier this year we provided additional signing and road marking as well as improving the lighting of certain signs. We will continue to liaise with Police Scotland regarding this matter as any driver ignoring the signs would be committing an offence.”
