Will you be marking signing of Armistice?
Readers have their say on anniversary
This Sunday, East Kilbride and Avondale will fall silent to remember those who sacrificed their lives to give us our freedom.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and there have been a number of events throughout the year.
On Armistice Day itself, on November 11, veterans’ associations, families of the war dead and dignitaries will be among those gathering to pay their respects at the Cenotaph in East Kilbride.
The News spoke to folk in East Kilbride town centre and asked what Armistice Day meant to them and if they did anything to mark it.
David Langlands from Mossneuk said: “Unfortunately, a lot of people like myself will be tied up with work on the day but it is still extremely important to take time to remember those who lost their lives.”
Wife Andrea said: “Sadly, there have been so many conflicts since WWI but I had family in both that war and the second, so I always make sure I get my poppy.”
Kenny McPhie from Westwood said: “I am with East Kilbride Pipe Band so will lay a wreath on the day. My dad was in WWI and went with the British expeditionary forces to Russia.”
Diane, his wife, added: “It’s important that you pay your respects as without these people sacrificing what they did we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
