Take a moment to remember those who died
Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.
People across the United Kingdom will stop for a moment, draw breath and take time to think and remember this Sunday.
It is Remembrance Sunday but this year’s events are especially poignant given they mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, signalling an end to the First World War.
Our coverage in this week’s paper reflects the importance of this anniversary with five pages set aside, including a double-page spread listing the men from East Kilbride and Avondale who made the ultimate sacrifice between 1914 and 1918.
It is impossible to imagine the sheer horror and violence and bloodshed that was experienced on WWI battlefields.
Men from all walks of life, young and old, in the firing line. It chills the heart to think of what they must have gone through while thinking of lives both lost and unfulfilled.
The experiences of those in both WWI and the Second World War should never be forgotten, not least because no one in their right mind would ever want to see this sort of conflict return.
That is why it is important that the stories of those who lived through and after these seismic events continue to be told and the generations of today carry the torch for those of yesterday. It is only by remembering that we can avoid the mistakes of the past. It is only by living in peace that we can truly honour those who laid down their lives for the freedoms we enjoy.
So at 11am on Sunday, stop for a moment, draw breath and take time to remember all of those who have gone before us.
Lest We Forget.
