Town gathers to pay respects to war dead

The people of East Kilbride will be rememberin­g the war dead at special ceremonies taking place on Sunday.

Ex-service organisati­ons, accompanie­d by uniformed youth groups and members of the armed forces organisati­ons, will gather at Legion Scotland East Kilbride in Bosfield Place for the parade which starts at 10.20am.

The parade will then make its way to the town’s Cenotaph, off Graham Avenue in East Mains, where members of the public are welcome to attend.

The officiatin­g clergy will be Rev Anne Paton of East Kilbride Old Parish Church and Father Rafal Sobieszuk of St Bride’s RC Church.

Following a short service, during which two minutes of silence will be observed at 11am, wreaths will be laid in tribute on behalf of the various organisati­ons in attendance.

The parade, led by East Kilbride Pipe Band and followed by South Lanarkshir­e Council representa­tives, other dignitarie­s, The Royal British Legion and military units, will march to the Old Parish Church for the Service of Remembranc­e conducted by Rev Paton.

Services of remembranc­e will also be taking place simultaneo­usly at other churches throughout the town and surroundin­g district.

After the service, the parade will make its way back to Legion Scotland East Kilbride where all the participan­ts will be offered a buffet lunch.

There will also be charity cheque presentati­ons to Erskine Hospital, Soldiers off the Street, Help for Heroes and Kilbryde Hospice.
