FESTIVE FUN

Big switch-on event

- Andrea Lambrou

East Kilbride will count down to the festive season with the big Christmas lights switch-on.

There will be plenty of festive cheer on Sunday, November 18 when crowds gather in the Village for the big moment.

The fun starts at Hunter Street and Montgomery Street where the ever-popular Christmas market returns from 12noon.

Festive revellers can then enjoy a whole host of entertainment starting from 2pm – including street displays, giveaways, children’s rides and a Superhero and Fairytale show.

Budding stars from Stagecoach Performing Arts East Kilbride will also be on song with a vocal performance.

Clyde 1’s Gina McKie will be back on hosting duties and keeping the crowds entertained during a packed programme of festive fun until the magical moment at 5pm when Father Christmas himself, and South Lanarkshire provost Ian McAllan, light up the town.

Provost McAllan said: “Like so many other people, Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year, and part of the excitement is the build up to the big day.

“What better way to start that build-up than the switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights.

“And, as always, the event looks like it will be packed with fun, entertainment and Christmas spirit. The atmosphere from both the entertainers and the local people attending will, I’m sure, be as festive as ever and it will be the perfect way to start counting down to Christmas.”

Motorists in the town should note that Hunter Street and Montgomery Street will be closed to traffic during the day on November 18.
