TJ Hughes ready for opening
Over 50 jobs are created
More than 50 jobs have been created as bargain retailer TJ Hughes opens its new East Kilbride store tomorrow.
The discount department outlet has taken the former BHS unit at EK, East Kilbride, with the retailer offering everything from home, fashion and fragrances to cosmetics, garden furniture and electricals from the 24,000 sq ft unit.
The jobs boost comes in the wake of a string of highprofile losses in the town centre including Maplin, Poundworld and Dune and with the axe hanging over its flagship Marks & Spencer store set to close in the new year.
Commenting on TJ Hughes’ opening, centre director Ian McLelland said: “This is a huge boost to EK, East Kilbride.
“TJ Hughes is one of the high street’s biggest names and we are delighted the retailer has chosen to bring its unique offer to the town.
“It is no secret that EK has been hit in recent months by extremely challenging retail conditions, however, this has not dampened our determination to continue to improve the experience at EK, East Kilbride.
“We are continuing to work to attract other new retailers to the town and hope to be in a position to announce some more new arrivals in the near future.”
Launched in Liverpool in 1912, TJ Hughes offers customers premium brands at significantly discounted prices.
Departments include cosmetics, fashion accessories, footwear, consumer electronics and home furnishings.
With the retailer bucking the high street store closure trend, as many as 240 new jobs could be created as part of its expansion across Scotland.
To celebrate the openings, the first 31 customers through the EK doors will be given vouchers worth between £5 and £50; and the first 50 customers to buy from the Regatta concessions will also receive a free men’s or woman’s fleece.
There will also be a selection of unbeatable bargains as well as normal discounts of up to 70 per cent off big brands.
TJ Hughes CEO Anil Juneja said: “‘Our East Kilbride and Clydebank stores will make a fantastic addition to the TJ’s Scotland store portfolio.
“Local shoppers will be able to enjoy big brands at a fraction of their original cost.”
