Marie Curie nurse is nominated for award

A Marie Curie nurse from East Kilbride has been recognised for her work with people living with a terminal illness.
Lorna McGarry is nominated in the leadership category at the Marie Curie annual Peacock Awards.
The 64-year-old gran from Calderwood has been caring for Lanarkshire families in their own homes for 19 years in her role with the Marie Curie nursing service.
“When I got the news about the award nomination I thought they’d got somebody else’s name mixed up with mine,” she said. “It very much came out of the blue but a lovely surprise.
“Providing care for terminally-ill people in their own home is very rewarding. It is such a joy when the family open the door to you and you can actually see the relief on their face because somebody has come to help.
“Most patients, in the palliative stage of their illness, choose to remain at home, surrounded by things familiar and people who are precious to them. To help them achieve that is a privilege.”
The nationwide Peacock Awards, now in its sixth year, was set up with the generosity of The Peacock Charitable Trust and give Marie Curie a unique opportunity to showcase the excellent care and dedication demonstrated by staff across the charity.
The awards are at the Royal College of Nursing in London on Tuesday, November 13.
Lorna was nominated for the leadership award by her manager Marie Young, a clinical nurse manager for Lanarkshire.
She said: “Lorna is an exceptional nurse and she inspires everyone with her dedication and passion. We regularly hear how she has made an impact on families she cares for and her commitment to sharing her knowledge and experience with other Marie Curie nurses is invaluable.”
