When do you go for a festive makeover?

News readers have say on decorations

- Paul Thomson

Christmas is on the horizon – and for many the countdown is already well underway.

Trees are being put up and residents young and old are getting into the festive spirit ahead of the big day on December 25.

Shops barely waited for Hallowe’en to pass before dusting down the tinsel – now many families have untangled those Christmas lights and are decking the halls for another year.

So with more than a month to go until Santa sets off on his sleigh, the News asked shoppers in EK, East Kilbride when they believed it appropriate to put up Christmas decorations.

Murray man Mike Entwistle said: “It’s got to be 12 days before Christmas, the traditional way.

“It’s crazy having them up right now. I think that’s too early.”

Gordon McGovern from St Leonards said: “There’s too much commercialism and for Christmas to last two or three months is a bit much. The start of December would be okay, but probably the standard 12 days before.”

Liz Irwin from Whitehills said: “Not right now. I used to do it two weeks before but with our grandkids now, it tends to be the first week in December. I can understand decorating outside a bit earlier because a lot of work goes into it.”

Phil Regan from The Murray, who designs his own Christmas cards, said: “Some people like to sync it with advent but I would expect a couple of weeks before. I don’t put a tree up myself, I prefer to have an image of Jesus up instead.”
