everyone showed was really pleasing because it was a difficult game.

“It was a really battling performance, but we know we’ve got the quality in our squad that we can come up with a bit of magic in those circumstances.

“We had to scrap and do the basics well.

“The second half we had more quality in terms of chances and we only really got those chances by winning a high percentage of second balls and doing the basics right.

“We didn’t play well against Civil Service Strollers a few weeks ago, but since then we’ve been fantastic.

“If we continue to apply ourselves like this, hopefully we’ll have something to shout about at the end of the season.”

EK took the lead in 20 minutes when Woods robbed Gretna of the ball and Anton Brady collected possession. As Brady burst upfield, he found Chris Humphrey on the wing and his cross to the back post picked out Woods, who slid in to steer the ball home.

Winter tested the Gretna keeper with a low drive inside the box as Kilby searched for a second, while down the other end the hosts’ claims for a penalty fell on deaf ears when Kevin Connelly slipped in the box under pressure from Craig Howie.

It took Kilby until the final moments to wrap up the points when Brady’s through ball beat the offside trap and Woods kept his cool to run in on goal and slot the ball past the keeper.

Attention now turns to a big Scottish Cup third round clash at home to Lowland rivals Gala Fairydean Rovers. EK will be big favourites to progress, but Malcolm is taking nothing for granted.

He said: “You have to go and earn the right to be in the next round.

“Gala certainly won’t make it easy for us because they want to be in the hat as much as we do.

“We need to make sure we do all the right things to get the result.”

Kick-off on Saturday at K-Park is 3pm.
