Towering feat of stupidity

-

Skyscraper (12) ●●●●●

This virtual Die Hard remake is as bonkers as its marketing and trailers suggested.

But Dwayne Johnson makes just about anything watchable and the move embraces its over-the-top stupidity. However, none of the villains on show can hold the wick of a candle to Alan Rickman’s Bruce Willis bothering brilliance.

Star Trek: Discovery (15) ●●●●●

The seminal sci-fi show gets a new makeover and while it lacks a Captain Kirk or Picard-like presence, this is an entertaining reboot.

Some twists are signposted but others catch you off guard and the writers juggle numerous plot strands effectively.

The special effects and set-pieces also often belie its smallscreen status.

Few would have been clamouring for a follow-up to 2011’s fun-but-forgettable Gnomeo & Juliet.

But the gang are back, this time relocating from Stratford to London and bringing Johnny Depp’s titular diminutive detective along for the ride.

The best, and worst, things about the first flick get trotted out again with the touching, playful bond between Emily Blunt’s Juliet and James McAvoy’s Gnomeo the driving force.

Laughs are plentiful but it’s more titters and giggles than insides-bothering cackles you’ll be letting loose.

There’s a distinct lack of true peril and tension as the plot is arguably even more kid-friendly than its predecessor.
