Thank you to kind people

-

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank the individuals who came to my aid earlier this month on Kirktonholme Road one day at about 5pm.

I tripped and fell on the pavement and ended up in University Hospital Hairmyres with stitches to my head.

I was with my husband but two cars pulled over and two women stayed with me while he went and got our car to take me to hospital.

We live near Kirktonholme Road and the women were fabulous.

It happened just a few days before we were due to go on holiday and I was all worried that I wouldn’t be able to go.

We made it although I was in a bit of a mess.

Another lady from a nursery also came out and helped and they were all so kind and I can’t thank them enough. Name and address supplied

Praiseforhospital

Dear Editor,

There have been many complaints about the NHS but my husband has nothing but praise for the treatment he received recently.

From the time the doctor was called out to the time he was discharged from University Hospital Hairmyres, he was given treatment which was exemplary.

All staff were very helpful and caring and no complaints whatsoever about the food. Thank you one and all for the great care and attention given to him. E Macsween, via email

PM’sdog-whistlepolitics

Dear Editor,

I am struck by the comments of Theresa May that her Brexit plan will stop EU migrants “jumping the queue” when it comes to working in the UK.

How low the UK has sunk that its Brexiter government is now resorting to spreading resentment towards European citizens, classing them as “queue jumpers”.

These individuals took no part in this mess and work here legally and contribute to the country in so many different ways.

They have the same general right of freedom of movement that allows British people the opportunity to work in Berlin and Paris, or retire in Spain.

Even so, their reward seems to be an increasingly hostile atmosphere.

Mrs May makes no mention of those British “queue jumpers” in other EU countries, symptomatic no doubt of the same attitude that classes those Brits abroad as “ex-pats”, while those from the other EU countries who come to work here are “immigrants”, an increasingly negative term.

Since the referendum in 2016, there has been an alarming increase in both veiled and more explicit verbal abuse to EU nationals – and this will no doubt increase as the negative impacts of Brexit become clearer and scapegoats will be required. Step forward those innocent EU nationals in our midst.

The UK has taken a wrong turn, as exhibited by the dog-whistle politics of Theresa May and her Tory government.

As the UK enters full panic mode, the victim of a bitter and corrupted Etonian gamble gone very wrong, we must do all that we can to support those EU nationals in our midst and defy this vile populist rhetoric. Alex Orr, via email
