EKYM lose out in cupfinal

-

East Kilbride YM suffered cup final heartbreak on Friday night as they lost out on silverware to Giffnock North.

The side have been allconquering in the Caledonian League 1B, wrapping up promotion last week with a 100 per cent record in their 14 games so far.

However, two first half strikes for Premier outfit Giffnock ensured they took home the Douglas Smith League Cup.

The teams battled through horrendous weather conditions with wind gusts of 70mph and torrential driving rain but, to their credit, they managed 90 minutes of competitive action.

Giffnock had a chance to take an early lead when their forward was through one on one with YM keeper Fraser Campbell, who defied them by turning the ball round the post for a corner.

At the other end, a similar opportunity arose for Mikey Carroll but the Giffnock keeper did well to deny the YM man.

Giffnock took the lead before the half hour mark when Jason Cassidy fired a shot from the edge of the area, which took a deflection in the packed penalty area on its way into the net.

Soon after, YM got themselves bogged down trying to pass out of defence and conceded a corner. Giffnock took it quickly and Jason Rae scored from close range.

The second half saw an improved performance from YM but they failed to penetrate a resolute Giffnock defence. Their best chance of the half came when Cammy McCulloch’s 20-yard free kick rattled the crossbar and the keeper held David Cameron’s header from the rebound.

This Saturday YM return to league business when they travel to Lochwinnoch to play Viewfield Rovers, kickoff 2pm.

YM Team: Fraser Campbell, Craig Kincaid, Ryan Kelly, Craig Fry, Jordan Calder, Liam Sloan, David Cameron, Jordan Fletcher, Ross McDonagh, Mikey Carroll. James Cameron.

Subs: Scott Cairns, Anthony Fenman, Peter Kelsall, Connor McCann, Sean Burke. • Meanwhile, there was better news for the YM 35s who won their second preseason friendly on Friday evening, defeating Dunipace 35s 3-2 with goals from Willie Holmes, Ryan Kelly and Rab Wyatt.

On Saturday YM’s GGPL side defeated Calderglen 3-2 with Kyle Rankin scoring twice and Jack Brown adding a third.
