Starved pups dumped ‘like rubbish’ by road
ANDREA LAMBROU
Four starved puppies were found cruelly dumped at the side of a road near Strathaven.
Animal welfare charity Scottish SPCA Lanarkshire was alerted to the scene by a member of the public who discovered the young dogs on July 4 at the side of the B743 road in Dungavel between Strathaven and Muirkirk.
The abandoned collie cross pups were all underweight and one was suffering from a broken leg.
They were rushed to the rescue and rehoming centre in Hamilton where they will be cared for until they can find their new forever homes.
Scottish SPCA inspector Dawn Robertson said: “We were notified by a member of the public who discovered the pups at around midday.
“The four dogs appear to be collie cross types, around two- to fourmonths-old.
“They are all very underweight and one had an obvious broken leg.
“We are unsure whether the injury was present at the time of the pups being abandoned or if this happened as a result of being left at the roadside and being hit by a vehicle.
“Thankfully these puppies were found before any serious harm could come to them.
“They are currently being cared for at one of our rescue centres where they will receive all the care and attention they deserve.
“These poor puppies were dumped at the side of a road like rubbish, with no regard for their safety or wellbeing.
“I would urge anyone with information regarding the incident to contact our confidential animal helpline.”
Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
