EK Bowling Club Invitational Triples

The sun shines on bowlers after a flooded green threatened tourney

- PAUL THOMSON

A flooded green couldn’t stop East Kilbride Bowling Club from holding their 14th annual Ladies Invitation Triples Tournament last weekend.

The popular tournament was in danger of being a washout after heavy rain on the Friday evening and when members first arrived at the Village venue to prepare for the day’s event at 8am, the green was flooded.

However, thanks to the hard work of the club’s greenkeeper, the tournament started on schedule and the rain stayed away for the rest of the day.

In fact, players and spectators were able to enjoy spells of sunshine and the odd refreshment to keep them cool on a muggy afternoon.

A fantastic day’s play ensued and the hosts had to settle for the runners-up prize after the EKBC team of Margaret Miller, Sheena Wright and Doreen Aitchison lost out to Lesmahagow in the final.

Congratulations to the winning trio, Agnes Forsyth, Myra Weir and Elma Forsyth.

Giffnock and Templeton Bowling Clubs will count themselves unfortunate after they were beaten in the semi-finals.

The Greenock team of Margaret Cox, Jan Cruikshank and Liz Russell and Templeton trio Marie Wilson, Jean Docherty and Margaret McCracken can be proud of their efforts.

“Club secretary Muriel Brew said: “It was a great success and an enjoyable day was spent bowling and catching up with old friends – and making new ones.

“Many thanks was given for the attendance from our President Jim Knox who presented the prizes.

“The club also wish to thank Jim Ballantyne, the representative from East Kilbride Sports Council, and for their financial support towards the tournament.

“We would also like to say a special thank you to our sponsor Gerry Condron from Condron Optical in the Westwood Square, who once again this year gave us fantastic financial support. This helped to make it a great day for us all.”
