Very proud of recognition
My work supporting older adults in the constituency continues and I was delighted to meet with our local Parkinson’s Society Group to discuss social care funding, access to specialist medicines post-Brexit and respite.
I have now put important questions forward to Government on these issues.
If you wish to add your name to my Parliamentary Petition against BBC TV Licence Charges for the Over 75s please let me know.
Last week in Parliament, I took part in an important debate on social care.
Too many people are finding it difficult to access the care they need and long-term funding solutions must be found that don’t penalise families for late life ill-health.
This is a health care lottery affecting all of us and families who have saved all of their lives, may lose their savings or even their homes to fund nursing home care.
I have heard from so many constituents who want social care to be funded in an integrated way alongside our NHS, so that burdens do not fall upon individual families when they are at their most vulnerable.
Social care funding is one of the most crucial issues of our time and one of my main key priorities as Chair of the All Party Health Group in Parliament.
This week in the constituency, I was absolutely delighted to attend the EK Arts Centre display of the paintings of Karin Hecht who has attended classes there for almost 20 years, learning her craft.
A beautiful display entitled‘Home and Away’ showing scenes from Scotland, Peru, Israel and Karin’s many other travels, well worth viewing if you are in the area.
I also wish to specifically commend Gary Butterworth and everyone at Westwood Golf Club for their annual fundraiser once again for the Children’s Hospice raising well over £4000 this year and almost £30,000 in total making such a huge difference for children across Scotland.
I made the commitment when first elected in 2015 that my work would focus on supporting the most vulnerable and as Chair of the Disability All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), we have been pushing for clear change in the narrative from disability to recognition of abilities. During my time as Chair, we have successfully campaigned for Changing Places toilets across the UK, contributed to the InclusiveTransport Strategy, ensured government funding for apprenticeships for young people with disabilities, supported funding for sports facilities access and successfully campaigned to make UK Aid available to children with disabilities in developing countries, getting many into school for the very first time.
I am so very proud of our collective work.
I was delighted therefore on behalf of the APPG Disability, to receive the award for ‘Parliamentarian of the Year 2019’.
It now has pride of place in my office and bringing back the award for Parliamentary work to our constituency of East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow for 2019 makes me particularly proud.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me at my EK office in Civic Centre, Strathaven’sWaterside Street or via email on lisa. cameron.mp@ parliament.uk for all of your local and national enquiries.
