Primary school pupils from Strathaven travelled to East Kilbride Central Library to find out the winner of South Lanarkshire’s Summer Reading Challenge.
Over the summer months school children from across the whole of South Lanarkshire took part in the challenge, supported by local libraries to encourage reading.
In addition to the individual challenge, local schools also competed to see who could get the highest percentage of pupils to sign-up.
Pupils from the Strathaven area made up three out of four of the groups called to East Kilbride Central Library to hear the announcement of which school had the highest percentage of readers taking part.
The pupils were joined for the event by award winning children’s author Alan Windram, who won the 2019 Bookbug Picture Book Prize for One Button Benny.
The winning School was named as Auchinraith Primary School from Blantyre with an impressive 47 per cent of pupils signing up to the Summer Reading Challenge.
Chair of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Councillor, Peter Craig, said: “Reading is a wonderful adventure for children of all ages and the Summer Reading Challenge gives them a quest to follow to take that adventure forwards.
“I congratulate all the children and schools who took part and want to give a massive vote of thanks to our wonderful library staff who really go out of their way to support the Sumer Reading Challenge and to encourage and support children reading all through the year.”
After the announcement of the winner the Auchinraith pupils, together with those from Sandford, St Patrick’s and Chapleton primaries were entertained by readings by Alan Windram and also got to ask him about his writing.
