Council rakingin cashfrom parking penalties

-

Almost 60 motorists in South Lanarkshire are issued penalty charge notices (PCN) every day.

Last year, 21,281 PCNs were issued by South Lanarkshire Council to the tune of £1.27m.

Figures obtained by the Local Democracy Reporting Service through a freedom of information request revealed more PCNs are being issued year-on-year in the region.

In 2017/18, 20,952 were issued – 329 less than last year.

East Kilbride (5232), Hamilton (7966), Rutherglen (2763) and Uddingston (1606) saw the largest number of PCNs issued in 2018/19 while Uddingston, Hamilton and Lanark had the highest ratio of PCNs issued across the region.

One PCN was issued for every three residents in Uddingston last year while one was issued for every six residents in Hamilton and one in eight in Lanark.

South Lanarkshire Council recovered £651,130.75 from penalty charge notices – down from £669,974.52 in 2017/18.

The value of a PCN depends on when, or if, payment is made. PCNs are issued at £60 but if they are paid within 14 days they are reduced to £30.

If no payment is made within 28 days the charge is increased to £90, and if it remains unpaid it is passed to the Sheriff Officers for collection, incurring further fees.

East Kilbride motorists forked out £157,899.20 paying PCNs last year while £80,522.40 was received from motorists in Rutherglen.

East Kilbride and Avondale was the only area to see an increase in PCNs issued after 5678 were given to motorists last year - up 476 on 2017/18.

South Lanarkshire Council did not attribute a location to 29 PCNs issued in 2017/18 and 37 issued in 2018/19.
