Family’s emotional appeal after accident

A 77-year-old woman knocked down in East Kilbride at the weekend has had to have a leg amputated as a result of her injuries.

Now her family have issued an emotional appeal for information to find out what happened to her.

Alice Sheppard was struck just after 8pm on October 12 before being rushed to Hairmyres Hospital.

The accident resulted in Alice suffering two broken legs, a broken jaw and brain injuries.

Since then, she has been placed into an induced coma and has had to have two major operations – one of which resulted in her losing a badly damaged leg.

Last Wednesday she was put through yet another operation with her family at her side.

Her son Alan Sheppard spoke to the News as he waited for her to be released from theatre, telling us it had been a ‘difficult and emotional’ time for the family.

He told us: “I got a phone call about 10.30pm on the Saturday night from a family friend who told me mum was involved in an accident.

“I went to A&E at Hairmyres along with my brother’s (John and David) to be met by police officers – they advised us mum had been hit and her injuries were quite bad.

“But it was only when a specialist at the hospital spoke to us that we realised the extent of her injuries.”

The grandmother of four – with a fifth on the way – has never been in hospital until now, with the family distraught this had resulted in “life changing injuries”.

Alan added: “We have had very little information about what happened so far.

“We are appealling for any witnesses to come forward no matter how little they know any information will be welcome.

“It is a busy road and we have to believe that someone must have seen something.”

Police Scotland have launched an appeal for information following the incident on St Leonards Road, which saw Alice struck by a white Honda Civic.

Road Policing Sergeant Leigh McCulloch said: “The woman sustained serious injuries.

“We are appealing for any witnesses in the St Leonards Road area, who may have seen either the pedestrian or vehicle prior or at the time of the collision, to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101.

Information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
