Diamond couple celebrate

A Sandford couple were joined by South Lanarkshire’s Provost to help celebrate a special anniversary.
Provost Ian McAllan dropped in on Arthur and Maisie Russell to help celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.
Maisie, one of six sisters and one brother, can claim to be Glassford born and bred and even held the honour of being crowned Gala Queen, as did her sister Morag.
The sisters took part in the Gala’s 80th anniversary celebrations earlier this year. Arthur originally hails from Lesmahagow and was an only son. The couple, who married at Glassford Parish Church on October 9, 1959, have three daughters, Christine, Sandra and Maureen; three grandchildren Stuart, Ritchie and Lexie and one great granddaughter Nieve.
Hard workers Arthur and Maisie held various jobs during their working lives with Arthur’s career including time as a farmhand, delivering milk, electrician and a haulage driver. Maisie worked as a Comptometer operator, had her family then returned to work at Barnock Primary and Wester Overton
Primary as an auxiliary.
Together they enjoyed caravan holidays.
Their favourite places were in the north of Scotland, were they went to various agricultural shows annually.
Later they travelled for holidays abroad with family.
They enjoyed Scottish dancing, where they met up with friends, with dances being held in venues all over.
Maisie was also a bowler and was a member of Sandford Rural where she was part of the drama group.
Provost McAllan said: “Arthur and Maisie have been stalwarts of village, getting involved in community events, working hard and raising a family – I feel honoured to represent the wider community of South Lanarkshire in congratulating them on their 60th wedding anniversary.”
