Steel dreaming of silverware as EK reach semi-finals

- PAUL THOMSON

Allan Steel says East Kilbride Rugby Club will take anyone in the draw for the West Regional Shield semi-finals.

The Torrance House gaffer watched his side ease past Wigtownshire on Saturday to book their place in the last four and that has lined up a potential tussle with local rivals Strathaven, Cambuslang or Allan Glens.

The semi-finals are due to take place on November 9 with the draw set to be held this week.

Steel has targeted the shield for silverware this season and he said: “Allan Glens are top of the table in our league, Strathaven have an exciting young team and I know the coaches there well, while Cambuslang would be a local derby for us as well, so we’ll be happy with whoever we get.

“We’ve got hopes of winning this tournament and we’ll have to beat whoever comes our way to do that, so we’ll take anyone in the draw.

“I’m looking forward to the game. It’s a big chance for us to get to a final, but there’s a lot of rugby to be played.”

EK will hope to get their league campaign back on track when they travel to Irvine on Saturday. They sit sixth in West Division One with three wins and one defeat in their opening four games, but Saturday’s outing in the cup was a good confidence builder.

“Wigtownshire made us work for the full 80 minutes, which was good because it keeps us sharp ahead of an important league game at Irvine this weekend,”Steel said.

“On paper it was a game we should win because Wigtownshire have just been promoted to the league above us, but the game isn’t played on paper and the boys put in a good performance.

“I’m pleased we managed to field a few youngsters as well.

“Conditions were slippy and greasy and that made it hard to move the ball, but we controlled the game well and scored a good few tries. We’ve had one slip up in the league already and we can’t afford another.”
