“With another spike in activity in recent weeks, a new action plan is needed to reassure all those who live and work in the Village, while the service itself is reviewed.

“SLC must also consider the future of Lindsay House itself. I have little patience for politician­s who call for the closure of Lindsay House with no idea how the services it provides should be replaced.

“Our community needs solutions, not posturing. That is why I have asked the council to look at the limitation­s of what is an ageing building, assess the performanc­e of YPeople as a contractor and bring forward realistic, practical alternativ­es to the current model of service provision for councillor­s to consider in an open, democratic forum.

“That could mean a smaller unit on the Lindsay House site with satellite services elsewhere, or it could mean using capital receipts from the sale of the Lindsay House site to invest in an entire facility that is fit-for-purpose.

“What is important is that the debate about the future of Lindsay House is an informed debate. That is what the community and the vulnerable people who need these services deserve.

“In the meantime, and until these issues are resolved, there must be an enhanced police presence in the Village area to support our local community police officers.”

“There were conflictin­g views on how to proceed, though it was noted Lindsay House, as a homelessne­ss facility, had been in the Village for decades and it is only comparativ­ely recently that there has been an escalation of unacceptab­le behaviour by some residents.

“I have had conflictin­g reports of the situation in the Village. It is the entertainm­ent centre of the town with lots of licensed premises and food outlets, and it is not of course the case that all trouble has been
