Goalkeeper set to leave club after fallout with boss

- PAUL THOMSON

East Kilbride are set to part company with goalkeeper Alan Martin after a fallout with gaffer Stuart Malcolm.

And the Kilby boss says he has been left baffled by Martin’s decision to leave the club.

The former Queen of the South goalkeeper joined Kilby in the summer, but he has played his last game for the Lowland League champions after the club put out a post last week looking to offload the 30-year-old. The News understands Martin took umbrage to being benched for the Scottish Cup win over Gretna on October 19 and has decided to leave.

Martin was named on the bench for the clash, which EK won 3-1, but before kick-off his name was removed from the team lines to be replaced by Lewis Stevenson.

Malcolm said: “Alan Martin doesn’t want to be part of East Kilbride any more. You’ll need to speak to Alan why that is.

“He’s made a decision that, considering his professionalism and the level he has played at, has baffled me.

“I don’t think it’s in keeping with someone at his level.

“Nobody can question Alan’s ability, but I’m more interested in dealing with players who want to play for East Kilbride.”

Pushed about why Martin’s name disappeared from the team sheet, Malcolm would only say: “We made a decision to go with Lewis. We won the game, so there you go.”

Matt McGinely has regained the number one jersey and Malcolm added: “Matt won us a league last year. He had 17 clean sheets along the way and he’s more than capable.

“But what we do have now is an issue with that position. We need someone to come in and offer support.

“It’s going to be difficult at this time in the season, but that’s the kind of season we are having.”

The News contacted Martin, who is yet to find a new club, but he was unavailable for comment.
