Pupils take aim at WW2

-

Kind-hearted pupils at Mossneuk Primary raised nearly £400 for Poppy Scotland.

In the run-up to Remembrance Sunday, the P6/7 class learned about World War Two.

They were given an insight into the Home Front, battles including The Battle of Britain and Dunkirk, as well as key events including rationing and evacuation.

Alongside their topic work, the class also looked into the charity Poppy Scotland, The Royal British Legion and the work the charities do.

Through the enterprise event to raise cash the children made poppies by finger knitting.

These were sold to teachers and senior pupils in the school. They all worked hard to learn how to finger knit and successfully made 100 poppies to sell in school.

Alongside selling poppies the children also ran a raffle with the support of the East Kilbride community.

Raffle tickets, like the poppies, were sold to teachers and senior pupils (all P6 and P7 children) in the school.

The raffle prizes included Odeon cinema passes, one-week pass to Nuffield Health and Fitness and a meal platter from Nando’s.

One pupil said: “It has been fun learning about our past and the people in our families that were a part of World War Two.

“It has been interesting hearing about the different jobs everyone’s relatives all had in the war, some are really cool.”

While another added: “It has been good learning about the different medals people could get from the war. I was able to think about the medals my great grandfather got.”

Teacher, Joanne Taylor, told the News: “We have been blown away with the support from the community and the children have all enjoyed taking part in raising funds for such a worthwhile cause.

“As well as learning about significant events from the past and linking this to our general history, the children have also been able to look into their own personal history and learnt about their own family members who fought, served and lived through the war.

“Through the fundraising we raised an amazing total of £392.16.

“Both myself and the class are blown away and thank everyone for their donations.”
