Primary pupils a class act

Loaves and Fishes Foodbank has praised local primary pupils for their muchneeded donations.

And the charity has said that efforts from children across the area has helped replenish much-needed stocks in the run up to Christmas.

Denis Curran, the foodbank’s chairman, was speaking after taking receipt of a number of harvest festival collections from schools.

And he stressed the unfortunate importance of taking receipt of such food parcels, especially at this time of the year.

He said: “People can’t afford to eat.

“That’s the blunt truth in East Kilbride 2019. Without donations, we would not be able to feed them.

“The charity does not receive a penny and none of our volunteers get paid – including myself. We rely entirely on donations such as the wonderful support we get from our schools.

“It is also a pleasure and privilege to be invited to speak to the pupils, and teachers, at their Harvest assemblies.

“And I never fail to be amazed at the amount of items that they collect. I explain how vital their contributions are to our work and how proud they should be.

“At the end of the assembly the senior pupils help move the mountain of carrier bags and their enthusiasm is a credit to their parents and teachers.”

Generous pupils, as well as churches across Lanarkshire, filled countless bags full of tins and packets of food, as well as household essentials and toiletries that will now be distributed to those in need.

Denis said that Loaves and Fishes would not exist without the help of East Kilbride communities – and many further afield.

He added: “A heartfelt thanks to Kirktonholme, Canberra, South Park, Castlefield, Mossneuk,

Auldhouse and Blacklaw Primaries.

“Also St Mark’s Church, East Kilbride; Carnwath Parish Church; St Margaret

Mary’s Church, Motherwell and St Andrew’s Church, Bellshill.”

Loaves and Fishes are based at 40 Singer Road,

Kelvin Industrial Estate, opening hours are between 10 am and noon, Monday to Thursday, and are available on 01335 223 657.
