That’s a wrap at Calderglen

Pupils star in filmmaking project

- FRASER WILSON

Pupils at Calderglen High were given a chance to flex their creative muscles recently as they took charge of the clapperboard.

Taking on the role of director for the day, the pupils enjoyed a creative workshop with FilmG – a project aimed at celebrating and supporting Gaelic.

That saw them work on Gaelic short film for a national competition.

One of 35 being delivered across Scotland, the workshop gave pupils a unique insight into the world of movie making.

They got the chance to work with a professional filmmaker and actor, helping to make a five-minute short film to be entered into a competition run by FilmG.

FilmG project manager Eilidh Rankin said: “The workshops are a fantastic opportunity for pupils to get their teeth into a project and speak Gaelic outwith the formal classroom environment.

“We encourage pupils to use their individual talents within the team; with room for everyone to shine.

“We hope to continue uncovering budding writers, actors, prop-makers, make-up artists, interviewers, social media officers, camera operators and directors for many, many years to come.”

Under the guidance of Calum MacAulay and Hamish MacLeod, pupils prepared their own script, props and locations for their day of filming, followed by a day of editing. Calum works as a freelancer across the BBC’s sport and news and other platforms, and is skilled both in front of and behind the camera.

Hamish is a freelance filmmaker and member of the up and coming Gaelictronica band, Inyal.

Their film, a drama, tells the story of two pupils who struggle to decide which path to take and whether they should listen to the good or evil forces within them.

FilmG entries go live in December with the best film scooping £1000 for the school.

Pupils with independent filmmaking flare are also encouraged to go it alone and showcase their talents, with a £500 prize also available to the ‘best young filmmaker’.
