Football tourney to remember Alex

- ANDREA LAMBROU

Torrential rain and high winds failed to dampen the spirits of fundraisers at the second annual Alex Lindsay Cup.

Friends of the tragic St Leonards teen raised £5000 at the memorial football tournament at Calderglen High before celebrating Alex’s 20th birthday.

The event aims to raise awareness of mental ill-health, with all funds raised being split between Beautiful Inside and Out (BIO) and a new charity being set up by Alex’s family.

Parents Robbie and Jill are in the process of commissioning a wishing well in Alex’s name at St James Retail Park as well as creating a dedicated cause in his name.

Alex, an apprentice mechanic, was tragically found dead in his home on July 8, 2018.

Around 160 players turned out to mark the Motherwell FC fan’s birthday, and passing, at his former school on Saturday.

EKYM lifted the winner’s trophy in the knockout tournament after beating EK Celtic Symphony 5-1 in the final.

Organiser Jack Smith, a close friend, told the News the event was once again a huge success.

He said: “Everything went as well as it could have and we still got a good turnout, despite the weather.

“The second Alex Lindsay Cup raised £5000 through sponsorship, player donations, a raffle and bucket collections.

“We raised £8000 last year but this was a good amount considering it was held at a bigger venue, K-Park, the first year and the weather was much better.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came and helped set up on the day – the players, family, referees Scott Bell and Stuart Cormack and head teacher Liz White and Ian Bell who couldn’t have been more helpful.

“I would also like to thanks Derek and Ann-Marie at Olives and Pesto who supplied the venue for the function afterwards – they couldn’t have done any more for us.

“And a big thanks to the entertainment, Alex’s friends Kieran Murphy and Ross Martin, who sang all night free of charge.

“The money raised will be split between Beautiful Inside and Out and kept aside for a wishing well and Alex’s new charity set up by his parents.”

The family told the News they were “delighted” that so many people have again shown such strong support in remembering Alex and wanting to make a difference.

They commented: “We were absolutely astounded at the determination and dedication of the 160 competitors in such horrific weather on Saturday.

“A true reflection of the friendships that Alex had and the impact his death has had.

“This was a demonstration of how committed, determined and focused our young people can be in society today, and needs to be recognised.

“We continue to be extremely proud of our boy Alex and that pride extends to his friends and the marvellous steps that are taking in trying to make a difference in our world today.”
