Around 600 motorists breathalysed by Police Scotland over the festive season were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
During the festive drink and drug drive campaign, which ran from December 1 to January 2, officers stopped 8,687 drivers and 580 of these were detected for drink/drug offences.
Head of Road Policing, Chief Superintendent Louise Blakelock said: “Over the course of our festive road safety campaign one in 15 drivers were detected for drink/ drug offences, which is extremely disappointing.
“The dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs are well known yet some drivers are still willing to take the risk.
“This is the first year we have been able to test drivers at the roadside for drugs. Almost 500 roadside tests were carried out with 185 drivers providing positive results, incredibly 16 who tested positive are required to drive as part of their employment and may lose their jobs.”
Police are asking the public to continue to report concerning driving behaviour to 101. This enables officers to act quickly to stop offenders before they kill or seriously injure someone.
