Sentence sparks mixed emotions

-

The sentence Megan’s killer received provoked a mixed reaction online with many slamming the ruling as far too lenient for the loss of a young life.

However, some of our readers believe the non-custodial sentence was justified stating that this was nothing more than a tragic accident.

Elaine Wyper posted:“Lots of lessons to be learnt here sadly at a child’s expense.

“Both families lives will never be the same. I’m glad he’s apologised to the family – they both have to live with it forever.”

Pamela Borland wrote: “This wee innocent girl got knocked down at a red light no matter what, he knew how he was driving and racing to beat the lights, which is a big no no.

“This sentence is disgusting she lost her wee life. Yes he will live with this but he’ll learn to‘live’with it, maybe go on to marry have a family of his own. He’ll still live.”

Fiona Mc said:“Tragic accident, heart goes out to both families. Some might feel there has been no justice served after this outcome but one life was took too soon and another has to live with that the rest of their life.”

Lynn Hardbattle wrote: “That was not driving with due care and attention, his inexperience and his unawareness killed a young girl. A life barely started.”

Steve Darby posted:“So tragic, prison won’t bring her back, and the lad has to live with this, tragedy.”

Callum Ds Miller wrote: “An accident is something that could not be anticipated or avoided.

“I cannot accept this was just a tragic accident it was a tragedy right enough for both families but never an accident.”

Lewis Strachan said: “Kieran might not have been jailed for this complete accident, but he has to live with what has happened for the rest of his life, that in itself is a life sentence.

“What good would him being in the jail do? He’s not a dangerous individual, poses no risk to anyone apart from himself. His life has changed forever.”

Norma Wiseman posted: “No jail sentence could ever punish this boy half as much as he will punish himself for taking the life of a young girl.

“A terrible sad situation for the family and friends, my heart goes out to them all.”
